The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries  The Fulbright Program provides participants--chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential--with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.  This is, of course, a lifelong journey ... let's go!

The Roots of the Fulbright Program
Senator J. William Fulbright (1905-95)

Senator Fulbright, first elected 1944 to represent the state of Arkansas, served for the next thirty years as a distinguished public servant dedicated to advancing the American condition.  As the longest serving chairman of the important Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Fulbright had profound influence on America’s foreign policy, and his vision for mutual understanding shaped the prestigious exchange program that bears his name.

With the support of the United States government and through binational partnerships with foreign governments, the Fulbright Scholarship Program sponsors participants from both the United States and foreign countries for exchanges in virtually all disciplines, including the sciences, business, academe, public service, government, and the arts--the goal of this program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

The Fulbright Program became reality when the Senate passed legislation in 1946, as part of the new American commitment to develop post-war leadership following the devastation of World War II.  Initial participants in the Fulbright Program went overseas beginning in 1948 and has since had incredible influence around the world. There have been more than 250,000 Fulbright students, scholars, and teachers, many of whom have made significant contributions to their disciplines and their countries.
